On Thursday, August 18th, newly opened Inkwell Modern Handmade Boutique & Letterpress Studio in Halifax held an open house. I arrived a little early so I could browse the shop before the crowd began to form. Andrea Rahal, the owner of Inkwell and a Letterpress Gang member, was excitedly getting ready for the event as her volunteers arrived to hand out treats, lemonade, and goodie bags with store coupons, as well as paper and instructions on how to create your own origami flower (courtesy of Julie Rosenthal Origami Creations).
Inkwell’s open house also featured a hands-on demonstration of Andrea’s newly and beautifully restored Golding Pearl No. 11 Improved Printing Press. Guests were invited step up and print their own bookmark, the message of which is to “Dream big & often” — a phrase Andrea obviously lives by, resulting in the creation of her beautiful store. I, of course, did not hesitate to try my hand at printing a bookmark (above).
This antique printing press dates back to c. 1920, and Andrea and her partner, Daniel, did an amazing job restoring it. For information about the restoration process, or to see before and after pics, visit Inkwell’s blog.
I’ve made it no secret that my new favourite store is Inkwell Boutique. If you haven’t had a chance to visit Inkwell yet I strongly recommend you drop by, say hello to Andrea, and fall in love with everything letterpress.
